Eczema and dermatitis are used synonymously most of the time.<span style="font-style: italic;"><br /><br /></span>Eczema means boil out (<em>Greek:</em> <em>ec</em>=out; <em>zema</em>=boil). In eczema, the skin seems to be boiling out. Eczema has been in use since the sixth century.
